President – Sarah Abdelmassih
Hello graduate student body. My name is Sarah Abdelmassih and I will be serving as your president of the GSC for the 2017-2018 school year. I am currently a Master’s student in the Applied Bioscience program here at UOIT. I completed both my Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education here at UOIT over the past 5 years. My research focus includes characterizing membrane protein receptors in the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus as potential new drug targets. I love everything science, fitness, and music related. I look forward to working with the whole graduate student body to address the needs of all grad students while also providing fun outlets to take a break from research.

VP Events – Lidya Salim
I am a MSc student in the Applied Bioscience program, focusing on chemical biology and biomolecular science. I obtained my BSc (Hons) in Biological Science at UOIT, and the valuable research experience that I gained during this time really encouraged me to pursue graduate studies. Throughout my time at UOIT, I have been heavily involved with different campus clubs and societies, so I am very excited to be part of the 2017-2018 GSC Executive Team as VP Events!

VP External – Veronica Cavallari
My name is Veronica Cavallari and I am the UOIT Graduate Student Council’s VP External and Secretary for the 2017-2018 school year. I am currently a Master’s candidate in the Materials Science program with the focus of my research being on fuel cells. A fuel cell is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy and produces water as waste. I was lucky enough to receive a mobility scholarship that took me across to Turin, Italy for three months in the summer of 2017. This experience allowed me to perform research, related to my Master’s project, and gain insight on a different culture, both within the University and the country of Italy.

VP Finance – Sierra Dargan
Sierra has been at UOIT since 2013, where she got her undergraduate degree in Biological sciences. During her undergrad, she served as both a PASS leader and Peer Tutor for Student Services and as well as a Teaching Assistant for the Physics department. She is currently pursuing her postgraduate studies in the Applied Biosciences program where she plans to continue to get her PhD.

VP Internal – Lyndsay Woolridge
I am a second year PhD student in the Forensic Psychology program. My research focuses on deception detection in non-native English speakers and the implications of observer bias when making veracity judgments in legal settings. I completed my Master’s degree in Linguistics at York University and received my B.A. in Linguistics and Psychology from Queen’s University. As VP Internal, I am responsible for meeting with the Dean of SGPS and managing advertising and social media initiatives. Being a member of the Campus Connected movement, I understand the importance of listening to the voices of diverse groups of people, and I hope to embrace this value in the role of VP Internal.
